This was a solid victory for Phoenix second team. With the blustery wind at their back, Gosford All Blacks opened the scoring with a fine try half way out on the right after generating an overlap down the right wing. The Phoenix threequarters appeared just a little sharper than their opponents with Jack Dainty and Luke Collins benefitting from the driving runs from centre John Winters. Nigel Coltman was first to get Phoenix on the scoreboard with a well taken penalty goal. Rogers then capitalised on good quick Phoenix possession from the loose, sold a dummy and crossed to take Phoenix into the lead. Coltman converted from halfway out on the right. It was Coltman again who slotted his second penalty goal to take Phoenix to an 8 point lead. Nigel Coltman drove on for Phoenix late in the second half, the recycled ball was swiftly moved across field and Paul Hilling was driven into touch a meter short of the Gosford line as the half came to a close. Phoenix needed to protect their slender lead and pushed Gosford back into their own 22 where Chris Varey, a replacement for the injured Brench gather the Phoenix lineout and raced through for a try to extend the lead for his team to 13 points. Gosford struck back almost immediately with a try of their own but the Phoenix threquarters were beginning to show their pace. Two tries in quick succession for the home side effectively closed Gosford out although they maintained the form and drove over for two tries which they converted to take their tally to 19 points. Phoenix crossed twice mre taking them to a convincing 37 points to 19 victory.
