Match Report: Phoenix 3rd XV 65 pts Feltham 7 pts

Phoenix 3rd XV 65 pts Feltham 7 pts

Phoenix third XV made the most of their league-free weekend when they entertained Feltham 2nd XV at Institute road last weekend. Their supporters were treated to a spectacular try feast as the Woods brothers combined from the outset to crucify Feltham for their mistakes. Almost from the kick-off Ryan Wood gathered to pierce the Feltham defence for the opening score. But Feltham responded with pressure on the Phoenix line and were surprised when Phoenix broke away to score again through Ryan Wood. With 12 points to the good after just 6 minutes, Phoenix began to gain in confidence, spreading the ball wide at every opportunity. Townsend converted and from the restart, Ryan Wood again ran through for a score, helped by a couple of Feltham mistakes. Another try minutes later from Townsend put Phoenix well into the lead and Feltham were destined for an afternoon of tackling practice. The Phoenix pack was strong enough but never took control. The Feltham pack on the other hand was extremely heavy and represented the most significant threat to the Phoenix score line. But in spite of several driving mauls, Feltham were unable to take advantage, continually spilling the ball in attack which let Phoenix off the hook on a number of occasions. Nevertheless. Phoenix needed to score the points and Ryan Wood obliged with his hat trick of tries just before half-time to take Phoenix into the break with a 24 point lead.
Feltham regrouped during the break and started the second half with an overwhelming desire to score and did so through a forward drive from 10 meters which Phoenix were unable to stop. The conversion was struck and Phoenix were just 17 points ahead early in the second half. Sadly for Feltham the Phoenix free-running overcame them shortly after the restart and Phoenix ran in several tries too take the match by 65 points to 7. However, the net result was a fantastic evening in the Phoenix RFC bar where everone celebrated an entertaining match. Next weekend, phoenix get back into league action against Alchester at Institute road Kick-off 3.00 p.m.
