5th Annual Nick Collins Memorial Match ends 27-17

Phoenix RFC - Nick Collins Memorial Match August 20th

Phoenix 27 pts Thames Valley Police 17 pts

Phoenix RFC got their season under way last Saturday with the Fifth Annual Nick Collin’s Memorial Match at Institute Road Taplow.

This was a fantastic day for all those associated with Phoenix RFC and the Thames Valley Police RFC. The rain soon gave way to sunshine, which added to the occasion, and the Phoenix pitch was in excellent condition.

Referee Viv Nicholas called for a minute’s silence immediately before kick-off in memory of Nick Collins (a Phoenix and Thames Valley Police Member who sadly died in a road traffic accident 6 years ago)
Thia match has become the traditional season opener for Phoenix and is played between Phoenix RFC and Thames Valley Police RFC.
Proceeds from the day went to the Taplow Traffic Charity Trust, which helps children affected by serious toad traffic accidents.

Coach Paul Jefferies commented that most of the Phoenix players that took the Club through to runner’s up in the Buckinghamshire County Shield last season, albeit losing in the final to Slough have been training hard during July and he is certain that they will be in form for this match. In fact he is very impressed with the number of players at training which has exceeded 40 for most training sessions. For the important coming season, Phoenix have a new coaching management team headed by Paul.
Paul says that everyone is getting into gear for the opening league match at Institute Road against newcomers to the league, Princess Risborough on 10th September preceeded by a friendly against Uxbridge.
The match was a close run affair with Phoenix just scraping home by 26 points to 17. Nick Collins’ parents John and Diane were very impressed with the arrangements and made the presentation to Phoenix Captain on the day James Dean.
