Phoenix opened their season last weekend with a friendly against Uxbridge at Institute road.

Uxbridge kicked off and Phoenix were immediately on the front foot, taking the game to the opposition. Gaw Tongchumsaeng made several penetrating runs, gaining significant ground before the Uxbridge defence got their tackling together. Brother Weeraphon then broke clear for Phoenix and linked with Gaw to take Phoenix deep into Uxbridge territory. A knock-on allowed Uxbridge to clear the danger. Phoenix began to struggle against the heavier Uxbridge pack. Uxbridge chose to put a kickable penalty into the corner, which came to nought, but a second penalty in front of the posts was slotted after 20 minutes for a 3 point lead. The Phoenix handling was superb throughout this match and almost from the restart, Phoenix wing threequarter Danny Clancy gathered a wayward Uxbridge clearance and danced through the Uxbridge defence swapping passes with hooker James Dixon in support before centre Simon Rodwell took the scoring pass for a try just to the left of the posts. Simmonds converted and Phoenix had a 4 point lead which they extended minutes later when Weeraphon Tongchumsaeng broke from the base of a scrum just inside the Uxbridge half, chipped the defence and won the race for the touchdown. Tweeraphon then broke again to feed Chris Laidlaw who dummied his was through for a try beneath the posts to take Phoenix to 17 points which was extended to 19 with the conversion. Phoenix were much more able to take their chances in open play where their back row managed to win a lot of loose ball and were just about managing to hold the heavier Uxbridge pack in the set pieces. James Richardson broke through for Phoenix and gained a penalty try which took Phoenix into a very respectable 26 points to 3 lead as half time approached.

The second half saw Uxbridge come back strongly through their heavy forwards, driving continually into the Phoenix pack. But Phoenix were able to hold them until inevitably cracks began to appear and Uxbridge drove over near to the posts for their opening try after an hour. Having found the rout to the Phoenix line, Uxbridge scored a second try a few minutes later to reduce the Phoenix lead to just 9 points. But Phoenix were to have the last word as the Uxbridge pack began to tire and a swift move along their three-quarter line resulted in a try near the posts which was converted by the reliable Dave Simmonds to give Phoenix a comfortable 33 points to 17 victory.
